Sister Dolores has sent us the latest news from the St. Bakhita Educational Centre in Tonj, South Sudan, which is included in the Adoption Programme of School Classed in South Sudan, and also regularly supported by some of you. During October, all pupils and students, along with teachers and Salesian sisters, gathered to pray the Holy Rosary, and also participated in the prayer initiative “A million children praying the Rosary”, which took place on October 13, 2022 around the world.

In South Sudan, there is currently a period of ripening and harvesting of groundnuts, i.e. peanuts, which are one of the basic sources of food for local aborigines. The sisters together with the students regularly plant this crop, which is later a part of the school lunch menu. Sister Dolores shared with us pictures of how diligently high school students helped during the harvest.

In order to support the education of girls, the Salesian sisters created girls’ football teams. These originated at St. Bakhita’s Girls’ School, designed for older girls who did not get a chance to attend school in early childhood, and at St. Bakhita High School. This is attended by girls who have successfully completed primary education and continue in high school studies in preparation for university. In this way, the sisters try to bring together girls from various backgrounds, raising their self-confidence and their position in the local community.

The St. Bakhita Educational Centre in Tonj provides education for 1014 pupils and students from kindergarten to high school. The centre also includes a girls’ school for older girls, which provides primary education and a focus on practical skills. If you wish to help the Salesian sisters in their work and support this beautiful initiative, join the Adoption Programme of School Classes through regular contributions. Already 35€ per month will help to cover part of the costs of one class in the educational centre.

Thank you for your prayers and for any support of the missionary work.
