Since November 2020, there has been the war in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. The conflict has caused thousands of deaths and widespread destruction, displacing over 2 million people, and sending tens of thousands of refugees into neighbouring Sudan. The war has deepened ethnic tensions and created an immense humanitarian crisis, with 4.5 million people — most of Tigray’s population — in urgent need of assistance, United Nations and local officials say. The turmoil is spilling over Ethiopia’s borders into Eritrea and Sudan in a manner that could destabilize the entire Horn of Africa region.
TOGETHER FOR ETHIOPIA
Five Slovak non-governmental organization eRko – Dobrá novina, Mary’s Meals Slovensko, Nadácia Integra, SAVIO o.z., Slovenská katolícka charita with support from Platforma rozvojových organizácii – Ambrela responded to this situation and created the initiative Together for Ethiopia. Its aim was to raise funds and support humanitarian activities, which will be direct assistance to people affected by the war. The collection lasted from 22nd March 2021 to 25th April 2021. The resulting amount of donations to provide humanitarian aid was 41 447.61 €. The organizations eRko – Dobrá novina, Slovenská katolícka charita and SAVIO contributed to the donations in the total amount of 35 000 €. The initiative was also supported by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic with a financial contribution of 20 000 €.
The total amount of aid from Slovakia for humanitarian aid to people in the Tigray region is 96 447.61 €.
Savio supported the Salesian project in the Tigray- in the cities of Mekelle, Adigrat, Adwa and Shire. The Salesians, in collaboration with the Italian organization VIS (Volontariato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo), distribute food, water and non-food items to more than 3,000 families every day. Youth from Salesian technical schools help with the distribution. An example is the Salesian community in the city of Adwa, which, together with the sisters of Mother Teresa, bakes more than 2,000 loaves of bread for the hungry every day.
The initiative Together for Ethiopia is over, but our collaboration with Salesians and VIS organization in Ethiopia continues. The situation in Tigray did not improve after five months of intense fighting. Reports from the media and observers of international organization speak of the terrible tragedies facing civilians, especially women and girls, during attacks by armed forces and militias.
