The 108th World Day of Migrants and Refugees was celebrated on Sunday, September 25, 2022. Pope Francis has chosen for this year a theme called “Creating a future with migrants and refugees,” a future according to God’s plan, to which we are all called to contribute.

Thanks to our generous donors, we have been able to help one of the largest refugee camps Kakuma in Kenya through our organization “SAVIO o.z.” in recent years.

The Kakuma refugee camp was established in 1992 near Kenya’s border with South Sudan. It was a haven for unaccompanied minors fleeing from warring factions in what was then South Sudan. Today, the Kakuma refugee camp has more than 225,000 refugees from nine countries, including South Sudan, Sudan, Somalia, Rwanda, and Burundi. It is estimated that more than 50 percent of refugees are young people and children.

The Refugee camp Kakuma, operated by UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in cooperation with Salesian Missionaries and some other humanitarian organizations provides to refugees with safety, security and safeguarding services such as housing, healthcare, drinking water and sanitation.

Salesian Missionaries have elaborated a number of programs and services for refugees over the years.  Salesian Catholic Parish of the Holy Cross offers spiritual service in 10 stations situated in the area of the camp. Since 2014 Salesians have also initiated club Savio in order to contribute to children’s development. Up today more than 1000 children are involved in its activities.

Thanks to our collection „Tehlička“ and the funds raised were possible to arrange a relocation of collapsing school building to a new safe place, This saved education for more than 3000 children who attend the school.

If you are eager to help Salesians in their work in the Kakuma refugee camp, you can join the donation campaign Darujme – Tehlička (tehlicka.sk).

Thank you for your support and the prayers for refugees, migrants and all those who care for them in their difficult living conditions.
